Bad day at YYZ

Jan 7th, 2009 by mike |
  • Was at YYZ picking up a relative coming in from YYC, was pretty chaotic with delays and cancellations from the freezing rain.

  • I always thought that Torontonians were whiners (not winners, whiners) when complaining about freezing rain. Then, I almost broke my back on my 5 minute walk into work.

Turning into one of them already?

    :D

  • Yesterday must have been a beaut

A Transat flight from Venezuela diverted to Buffalo because of the fog, and passengers had to sit on the plane for 5 hours before it took off for Toronto.

    And this from AEF:

Transat was not the only flight to take a diversion last night. In YUL we had ZR from 4 local to after midnight. Tower need 8nm spacing to allow for departures, even that was tight. Had at least five overshoots, mostly due to traffic skating to position then unable to line up. Vectoring for an 8 mile spacing meant starting with 11nm, with the usual 30 kt tailwinds. Every 5-10 minutes someone low on fuel would leave the hold and divert to their alternate. Guess the press just got wind of Transat. And things were worse in YOW and YYZ. In YOW nothing got in for around 3 hours, and YYZ had an acceptance rate of 18/hr, with around 45 in the hold. One of those nights!

Wow, I am counting my blessings. I had a flight YVR-YYZ, scheduled to land 15:43. We left YVR about an hour late, something about the plane having come in from Sydney late and needing to be groomed. Landed about 45 minutes late, no fuss no muss, and went home. Figured the freezing rain was all over. While I can't quite understand all the nm, acceptance rate etc in the quote, i can understand "nothing got in" and well, I'm happy I got in and was blissfully unaware.

Global this morning suggested every 400-series highway had at least one major accident due to the freezing rain. Delays were averaging ~1 hour this morning keeping the runways un-frozen and with the extensive de-icing procedures required... Another messy day in YYZ.

  • AC 444 was 1 hour delayed boarding and we sat on the plane for another hour before takeoff so arrived 12:xx rather than 10:xx , 2 hr delay. They were so slow in updating status that I had to walk between the MLL and gate 124 3 times.

    AC 446 was cancelled.

  • My wife called about 15 mins ago to say she was on the plane (flt 454 - due to depart YYZ at 14:10) - so it may be that things are back to normal now.

  • Could be another bad day tommorrow considering the current temps are 17 degrees and then tonight dropping to -4 with precipitation in the forecast. Be sure to take extra caution for your commute into work and if you have a flight at Pearson be sure to check with your airline for flyertalk I'm Luubert ;)

Not good weather as far as flight operations are concerned, but I guess most YYZers will take the freezing rain over snowy frigid temps during this time of year. Temperatures are well above normal for this time of year and to many torontonians....that's a big relief. ;)

When was the last time temps went up to 17 deg. at YYZ in January?

  • Several flights to ORD have been cancelled as a result of weather... one interesting thing I did notice:

UA 1109 at 15:00 is scheduled to be operated as a 752 -- an unusual UA plane to see in YYZ.

  • I remember once spending a Christmas shopping day walking from King Street to Union Station using the PATH. All these shops CLOSED on the Sunday before Christmas!

In all seriousness, PATH doesn't help at all. :'( (Bay/Bloor) ..

If you are downtown you are going to have to learn the PATH system ;)

Had my ususal 15 minute drive this morning. Wonderful traffic morning as far as I was concerned.

No idea but I remember a couple years back it was 25 in mid February :p

Just plain sucks to be you then. It should be better for your walk home.

UA has been doing that as of late.

    Had a 75 on a ORD-MSP and ORD-DTW on a 75.
