SAMBA not working with windows NT

Jan 7th, 2009 by wktd |
  • i have set up a server on an old maching running windows nt workstation 4.0 and when i try to get xbmc to see my shares it asks for a username and password. i tried the admin account(it was the only one on the pc) but it diddnt work so i made another account and that failed also. the funny thing is that i have 5 windows xp machines in the home and the xbox can access files on all of them without any password. some of the xp machines have several accounts. how do i get xbmc to access the files on the nt machine without a password?

ps all the machines are hooked up by ethernet. no wireless here and also the nt machine is connected to the network at 10mb while all the other machines are 100mb

  • sounds like guest access is turned off for nt.

here is an quick article regarding nt and shares -
    http://www.felgall.com/netntu.htm

try access the same share from other clients, like the xp machines. make sure you are an unknown user to the nt machine, because windows will send authentication by default. for example, you mentioned that the nt machine has the user administrator, therefore, logon to your xp box as some other user besides admin. the xp box should prompt you for username and password. try guest with no password. you should be able to see the nt shares at this point.
